Today’s uses of the shipping container are wide and varied, a far cry from the original intentions of Malcolm Mclean back in the 1950’s when the first boxes went into service. They were originally used in an effort to make the shipping of cargo more efficient when compared to conventional break bulk operations.
Rather than just a glorified steel packing case these days containers can be seen up and down the country in business premises, recreational areas and even in back gardens. There are many reasons why they have become so popular. The steel outer structure is inherently strong and secure, the double rear outer doors and dimensions of standard boxes make ideal storage units. Their intermodal nature means that they can be transported easily and by many different means.
The steel exterior and hardwood flooring make an ideal base for container conversions. Boxes can be modified into site accommodation units, housing, exhibition stands and just about any kind of custom modification you can think of.
Another industry that makes good use of shipping containers is self storage. Yards have sprung up all over the country with new and used boxes lined up at ground level and even stacked with gantries offering secure storage.
