With prison overcrowding and night time closures of many local police stations to reduce costs quite often cell overcrowding can become a problem. For some minor offences such as shoplifting or anti social behaviour offenders quite often have to be taken some distance from town centres by police officers to out of town police stations for processing, taking them away from the areas they are patrolling.
A solution to this could be the use of mobile custody centres modified from shipping containers . This type of conversion could be placed temporarily in town centre car parks to deal with late night anti-social behaviour where the offender is usually processed and released in a relatively short space of time freeing up the officers to return to trouble hotspots.
Shipping containers can be effectively converted into custody units with the addition of high security personnel doors, barred windows, lighting, insulation and heating. Partitioned cells and processing areas can be separated inside, the whole unit being able to be dropped into place by self unloading, crane mounted vehicles. These units would be similar to the mobile blood donation, health monitoring or recruitment centres you see in town centres and outside shopping centres on Saturdays.
When targeting specific crimes police will be able to deploy these mobile custody suites straight to the scene, once the operation is over the container can be collected and placed in storage until such time as it is needed again.
