2012 London Olympics Creates Increased Container Demand

As with any major construction project the Olympic Park in Stratford is generating enormous demand for both new and used shipping containers. The initial ground works require site offices and mess rooms for the hundreds of civil engineers and contractors preparing the ground. In order to secure their equipment on site during the night boxes are being used to store their plant and vehicles when not being used.
This phase of the development is almost complete and the actual construction of the many buildings and stadium is underway. Again containers converted into site accommodation are used by those companies involved, as well as standard equipment for storage. The materials needed for the construction are quite often sourced abroad, leading to increased shipping with imported goods finding their way to London.
Container conversions are also evident throughout the Olympic Park. Catering units are required at the moment for those building the site, with no plans for permanent catering facilities they will no doubt be in even greater demand during the build up to, and during the games themselves.
There are mixed feelings amongst the general public regarding the Olympic Games, the cost, whether the U.K should have entered the bid to host them and the legacy of the games and buildings. One fact that cannot be ignored is the part that shipping containers have played in the construction of the park and in delivering the games.
